About Us
All tinctures are made in our lab in Golden, CO USA with a commitment to quality and excellence.
Our formal training is engineering and environmental sciences, but we have always been of a DIY mindset per the adage, "if you want something done right, do it yourself." With much study, trial and error, we produce the best quality tinctures on the market.
Our Story
Before Original Meds was officially formed here in Colorado, our start crafting small batch functional mushroom tinctures came from helping a friend counteract serious health issues using Turkey Tail. She had exhausted all formal medical treatments and was told there were no other options. After two months of taking our tinctures, she returned to the doctor where they saw a drastic reverse in her condition. This is why we formed the business to bring these tinctures to help more people find a high potency, clearly labeled option.
Initially, our friend could not find adequate concentrations at the health stores, most brands were not clearly labeled and were made from myceliated grains, so she could not be certain that she was getting pure high potency Turkey Tail. This is why we began crafting unfiltered ultrasonicated dual extraction tinctures using water and ethanol to produce a 1:1 concentration (28 grams fruit body mushroom to 1 ounce of tincture).
To ensure these tinctures can be used by children, pets, and those in alcohol recovery, we reconstitute our tinctures with glycerin instead of alcohol as the carrier and preservative. The bonus is that this makes our tinctures the best tasting as well, which helps folks continue using them to maintain health.
Ghosting Large Competitors
Myceliated Grains
Leading commercial international companies use myceliated grains instead of fruiting bodies because it is good for their profit margins, not necessarily good for their clients as the grains can be considered to dilute the potency of the mycelium in use. Fruiting bodies have been shown to contain higher beta-glucans, which are critical to wellness and health.
True scientific studies, not company marketing videos dressed up as scientific, that indicate the benefits of mycelium are based on pure mycelium grown in bioreactors, which do not meet commercial companies' business models.
"Brands that state on the label that their products contain "mycelium," "mycelia," "myceliated rice," or any type of grain in either the supplements facts or "other ingredient" label sections contain myceliated grain mushrooms. Myceliated grain mushrooms are grown in plastic containers on cooked, sterilized cereal grains, such as oats, rice, milo or sorghum - instead of on real tree trunks and rich soils.
When mushrooms are grown this way, the mycelium fibers become deeply enmeshed with the grains and can't be effectively separated from them. The result is a product that's high in starch because of the grains, rather than nutrient-rich properties found in real, full spectrum fruiting body mushrooms.
The main reason companies grow mycelia on grain is because they're easier and cheaper to grow and produce versus real, fruiting body mushrooms. One is manufactured in a lab, while the other grows naturally in nature."
